When Julienne attempts to sympathize with how hard life has gotten for Mrs. Calthorpe, the overwrought woman snaps at her. Meanwhile, Violet is given two tickets to the new hit musical The Sound of Music, but as Fred is not interested in the film, Violet decides to raffle them off with all proceeds going to the incubator fund. One of the most embraced has been Call the Midwife season 9, which proves that the BBC gem is unlikely to lose steam anytime soon. But when Sister Hilda checks in and mentions the birthmark casually, Ron gets upset and storms off. At the mention of this, Ronald storms out of the room and Sister Hilda follows after him to apologize. Call the Midwife is a moving and intimate insight into the colorful world of midwifery. As fate would have it however, her own life will soon overlap with Maria von Trapp’s more than she knows. Crane clarifies that Aileen is her priority but if he’s staying, he must be useful. The collapse shows Sister Frances that Grace has been overwhelmed, so she brings Albert to the hospital to visit Grace, bearing some gifts. Do-Re-M-eanwhile, Sister Monica Joan is dealing with her own problems, like scoring tickets to “The Sound of Music.” After her movie night proposal is shut down by Sister Julienne who has not yet boarded the Julie Andrews train, Sister Monica Joan stumbles upon a “Sound of Music” contest at Violet Buckle’s shop. What she doesn’t see through all of this however, is that everyone, including her doting husband Albert, could probably fend for themselves if they were asked to. Later Sister Hilda runs into Ronald and his wife Aileen (Carla Langley) outside the library. When she’s finally able to get in for a proper examination with Dr. Turner, he prescribes iron tablets for anemia and refers her to St. Cuthbert’s for the fibroid growths that are causing her heavy bleeding. Plus, Grace has been having back aches and bleeding—she thinks it’s just the run-up to menopause. She soon concocts a plan to convince the sceptical Sister Julienne that perhaps a trip to the cinema might benefit the whole of Nonnatus House. A one-woman show, Grace begins to crack after her diagnosis from Dr. Turner. Venturing out in an outfit of donated clothes, she walks the streets of Poplar and is both ignored and leered at. Drama following the lives of a group of midwives working in the poverty-stricken East End of London during the 1950s, based on the best-selling memoirs of Jennifer Worth. Unsurprisingly for the time, many of the attending men are uninterested in the mothercraft class, but at least one student, Ronald Mallen, has come prepared to soak up all the knowledge he can about childbirth. One meltdown to the next, we return to the maternity home to see the Mallens. The whole Nonnatus House staff set out with an elated Monica Joan leading the pack. Dr. Turner assures the new parents that Stephen’s strawberry mark is superficial and will probably disappear in a few years. But it turns out Albert’s devoted wife Grace ( Samantha Spiro) is the one Frances really needs to worry about. A woman has just died, and her granddaughter, whom Julienne delivered as a baby, has brought Nonnatus her grandmother’s savings: the elderly woman wanted the midwives to have it. We’ve made it past the halfway point of Season 9, and a popular musical called “The Sound of Music” (you may have heard of it) has made its way to the big screen. Womp. Grace complains of a persistent backache and heavy menstrual bleeding, which Dr. Turner suspects has made her anemic. Sister Julienne is far more affected by Grace’s outburst. It’s their story without the whistle and the evil fiancée. Like the character, Samantha has a lot on her plate with the emerging character. Don’t worry, she would never actually leave us (fingers crossed). When she finally escapes the chores and caretaking to see Dr. Turner, she receives some unwelcome news about her health. As Jenny Lee settles into her role, there is a new arrival at Nonnatus House. Revisiting a life before St. Raymond Nonnatus, she slips away without telling her peers, taking some of the house’s petty cash for her impromptu adventure (tsk tsk! The woman who dotes on her husband one minute is short with the cheerful but timid nun the next. Hearing about her hospitalization from Albert, Sister Frances arrives to check on her and comes bearing good news. Grace takes offense to this, saying she can manage on her own, and hurries Sister Frances out the door, leaving little room for chit chat or a chance for everyone to get to know one another.The Weight of the World on Grace’s Shoulders. Yet she hides the burden from the rest of her family (and the midwives), donning her superhero mother-wife cape by day and finding herself overcome with exhaustion by night. His mother later remarried to a man who ended up being an abusive alcoholic, and Ronald vowed that he would be a better, kinder dad like his biological father to all his future children. The spot grows which puts Ronald in quite a panic. Jenny is placed on the district nursing roster for a few weeks. Sister Hilda lauds his eagerness, but when he arrives with Aileen at the maternity clinic after her water breaks, Nurse Crane is in attendance, and she’s not as keen on having husbands take part in the birth. More great talents have joined, including the wonderful Samantha Spiro. Created by Heidi Thomas and based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth, this period TV series centres in on midwives working in London in the 1950s and into the 1960s, and we’ve been in love with it since 2012! From Sister Frances to Sister Julienne, her irritation with the midwives turns to rage when Sister Julienne tries to empathize with her after observing the state she’s in. And so she does. Newly qualified midwife Jenny arrives in the East End to embark on a challenging career. Sister Hilda clearly has a soft spot in her heart for this gentle man and tries to reassure him that his wish to be at the birth is a fine thing. Stream the best of PBS. Ronald is absolutely thrilled with the day’s events. Anytime, anywhere. People knock into her; many don’t even notice her. It is Sister Hilda who tactfully encourages Ronald to open up about his own childhood and get to the bottom of his motivations. Ron just wants to be a good dad like his birth father—and Sister Hilda assures him he can be. Nurse Crane and Sister Hilda become involved with an anxious new father, Ronald. Grace’s hectic life is too much. Grace balks at having to leave her family and be in the hospital for a couple weeks to recover from the operation. When Phyllis sees that Ronald is attached to Aileen’s hip and won’t let up, she lets it slide on the condition that he helps if needed rather than be there as a passive participant. What next?! While Sister Frances is at the Calthorpe’s, Ingrid barges in with her newborn: she’s moving in for a bit. The film is causing quite a buzz in Poplar and Sister Monica Joan is the most giddy of them all. That night in the pouring rain, Ronald drives a laboring Aileen to the maternity hospital. Awkward. Big brother Tim wisely guides his sisters to give the tickets to their parents who are in dire need of a night out. Women of her generation had only themselves to rely on during the lean years of the war, and might resent any aid. Last night, we were gifted with a few of our favorite things when “Call the Midwife” returned for Episode 5. They learn that it’s a superficial birthmark likely to disappear in a few years. More drama wrapped in beautiful British accents, a little more Sister Monica Joan screen time, and even a shoutout to our hero, Dame Julie Andrews. When Julienne apologetically tells Grace she doesn’t look well, Grace lashes out: how could a nun know hardship, or what it’s like to be a taken-for-granted, invisible middle-aged woman asked to do so much without thanks? She leaves for the market, but upon returning home, exhaustion and her anemia finally take their toll and Grace collapses to the floor. When she departs, Sister Julienne is left stunned by Cheryl’s criticism and deflated. Julienne’s refusal to plan a group outing to the theater belies a recent accusation against her: that she and the other sisters don’t know what a hard day’s work is like.
